I guess that I will use this as kind of a rebuild thread for my Dana 70. I bought this axle about 1 1/2 ago for $150.00 off craigs list and I am just now getting to it.

This axle came out of a 80's Ford Diesel Truck and it is the popular Dana 70U. The first thing that I did was take the axle shafts out of the hub.

And to my surprise they were 35 spline.

These shafts are next to my stock 27 spline Dana 35 shaft!

After I had the shafts out of both sides I pulled the cover and drained the gear oil to find the factory power lock limited slip.

Then I drained the fluid and cleaned everyting with a good coat of brake cleaner and aired it dry.

Now I pulled the carrier bolts out and removed the caps and the ring gear and carrier pulled right out.

When I got to this step I could not find any info on removing the hub. i had read conflicting info on what tool that I would need to remove the hub. After two tools later I found the one I needed. it is 2 9/16 Socket with 3/4 inch drive. This is a big socket.

Once I got the hubs off I took off the wheels and began to cut off brackets.

Now I have all of the brackets cut off except the spring perches (ran out of cutting wheels) and this is where i stand. I have orderd a diff cover and disc brake brackets from Great Lakes Offroad and they should be here this week. Now I will be ready for paint and gears and lockers.
